Hi ... I still need some help please
so last spring I asked for help with my 6 hp Johnson outboard ... as I throttle my boat moves forward gets me up to about 4 knots.. if I go passed about 4 knots...it revs up and stops ( The motor is still on but prop is not moving ) ... The motor revs up but won't move ..I turn it off turn it back on and then I can go again up to 4 knots then it's the same results ...everyone thought that it was the prop .. I replaced the prop but it is still doing the same thing .. does anyone have any other suggestions thank you so much for any help

Did you replace the shear pin too? ( if it had one.)

My bet is that the problem is in the gearbox. Worn gear teeth or clutch dog is causing it to jump out of gear under load. When you shift it into neutral to restart it, then shift back to forward, everything is 'reset' until it's loaded up again. Lower Unit repairs aren't usually a DIY operation- inspection, replacement, shimming, setting preload... not easy.

How old is the motor?

Thank you so much that sounds like the problem ..I will definitely have to take it somewhere for the repairs..

The motor is a 1969 Johnson .. I'm in Baltimore md. Now I need to find a reliable repair shop.. ugg ..

I'd be checking ebay first for a 'guaranteed' complete lower unit. Might be a lot cheaper to swap it out than to have the old one rebuilt. That's an old motor that's only worth a couple hundred bucks in good running condition. I like tinkering. If it were mine I might take a shot at rebuilding it myself just as a project/learning experience, understanding that if it doesn't work I'm not really out anything.

Have you checked to see if the hub in the prop has spun?

Do the easy/cheap stuff first.

OP replaced the prop. Anyway, that motor uses a shear pin drive, so pretty sure the hub is integral with the prop. You can break the pin, but you can't spin the hub.

And sometimes the pin pieces will retain enough friction between hub and shaft at low torque to spin the prop until higher rpm torque overcomes friction. Which is why I asked.

But since the prop was replaced, that would likely have been noticed.

I was responding to Hogan, Sandy. Same as you, I figured since the prop had been replaced, a broken shear pin was unlikely.
