2001 340DA 829 mile cruise

We just completed a cruise from Destin, FL to Shreveport, LA in a 2001 340 with 454s. We had to go to Venice, LA about 90 miles south of New Orleans to cross the Miss River because of lock damage in New Orleans.. Then up to Grand Isle, LA then to Morgan City, La up the Atchafalaya, River the Red River to Shreveport. When cruising we used 3600 RPM and got from 24 to 26 MPH depending on weight. 152 miles against a swift current we got 21 mph.
7 days, six locks, 829 Statute miles, 49.5 engine hours, 1128 Gallons about 20 hours on the generator.
22.78 GPH average
1.36 gallons per mile
16.75 miles per hour average
118.5 miles per day
.735 miles per gallon

talk about some expensive fun! :) You need to post pictures!!!

All we did was cruise and enjoy the ride. The pictures are in our memories. Why pay for a delivery on a trailer when for just a few hundred more you can have an adventure.

The Chafalya River is super swift to run upriver for any amount of time.
Where did you get the gas on that river? And the Red River?

rduhon,
We docked on an old tug, which was rafted up to a barge, which was pushed up on the bank at Simmsport. Since it was Saturday night we had to haul gas in 12 five-gallon cans. Took three hours. Our daughter and son in law met us to help with this ordeal. Next fuel is on the river at mile 142 on the Red in St Maurice.

Morgan City to the Marina south of Shreveport is 323 miles
Morgan City to St Maurice is 251 miles
Morgan City to Alexandria is 197 miles
Morgan City to Simmsport is 116 miles
If you would like to cruise that route I would suggest you trailer your 281 to Shreveport and cruise back downstream. We would be happy to help you up here. You will enjoy the trip. We have a great marina with floating and covered slips fuel and a store. What is your fuel range?

I don't have a trailer. My boat is also too wide for normal towing. I would have to have a permit.
We boat everywhere we go. No trailering with this boat.
I was just wondering about the gas.
We can probably go 150 miles, but that would be pushing it.
We like to fill up within 75 miles or so.
I bet the views up the basin area was beautiful before the hurricane.
We passed over the basin bridge right after Gustav and it smelled like stagnent marsh and salt water.
I think our next boat might be more trailerable. We can see more that way...

I did a 1000 miles Connecticut to Mount Desert Island Maine and back in a 30' 1989 Sundancer. It was a couple of years ago and I thought gas was expensive then. Solo trip. Heck of good time.

I will be doing a 400 mile trip in my 97' 330 when I get a couple of things done (bottom paint, salt water flush kits, additional money for changin from non tidle to tidle water and and $1600 for gas and docking. I will be traveling from Lake George on the St. Johns River up to Jacksonville and then down to Stuart.

I am really looking forward to it and thanks for the details.

Good luck Bob. Before our trip we serviced the fluids, filters including gas filters and water pumps.
