AS i have been a member for 46 seconds now I figure it is time to ask for help.

The motor in my 1995 Sea Ray Sea Rayder with the 3 cylinder 90 hp died. I am 2nd owner and have had it for 5 years, it has 400 hours on it, regular maintainance etc.
My mechanic thought it was the carbs... put new ones on. thought it was the magnito.... replaced. thought it was something else... replaced that too.

Then, once he got it to fire, he did a compression test and found the following pressures : 120psi, 38psi, 0(yes, zero) psi.
I moved in Dec and brought the boat with me, no mechanic here yet. Anyone know one in the Nothern VA, MD, DC area that wont fleece me?

Any ideas on what I should do? The hull and interior are nice, the trailer is good... should I scrap the boat? rebuild the motor? how much is a motor rebuild on these things anyway? is Ebay calling my name?

HELP- thanks in advance.

Welcome to BoaterEd Nick. I had a similar experience with a 1997 SeaDoo Challenger. The two cylinder Rotax engine died last fall. I originally planned to rebuild it using sleeve assemblies that I found on eBay, but after opening it up, we saw that it had multiple problems and only had a future as a "core".

My research led me to PMC, a reman outfit in Florida. I paid roughly $900 for a rebuilt block, including the shipping to me and the return shipping of the core.

Their packaging effort was a joke. The box arrived with the shaft protruding from the side of the box. I wasn't there to receive it, so someone else signed for it on my behalf. I probably would've accepted it anyway, because it was already mid-June and we wanted to get the boat onto the lake asap.

When I called for quote, I was told I could expect the block to arrive in 7-10 days. By the time I placed the order, they told me it would be 2 weeks. It took about three and a half weeks. The sales rep apologized several times and claimed that they had an unusual amount of orders.

The threads on the shaft were damaged from the shipping, but repairable. Otherwise, their workmanship was impressive. The block comes "short", so it's quite a project to transfer all of the hanging parts, but it came nicely painted and now that it's installed, runs perfectly.

That's a Mercury Sport Jet 90. They're all over the place and I'd think you should stand a good chance of finding a complete one that you could transplant into your current boat.

Clymer makes a full manual for that engine, here's the ISBN: 0892876573

There really are a lot of those out there as at least 3 or 4 different boat manufacturers made a small runabout with them. (Regal, Bayliner, SeaRay....)
