LOoking for input...
I'm thinking about adding an ACR - AIS receiver or transceiver to the boat...they aren't a requirement as of yet, but can see it happening in our area of Hampton Roads.
Currently the receive only version is available in the CONUS, however the transceiver is available every where but here (FCC has not approved it for CONUS use as of yet)
Thanks in advance for all replies

I installed an el-cheapo $189 single channel receive only unit last season and I absolutely love it. If I were going to do it all over again, I would buy a 2 channel receiver for more timely data. The targets show up on both my chartplotter and radar for easy target tracking.

The issue of type B transceivers is a bit more complicated. Even if/when they are legal in the US, ships may not be able to "see" the data. It will take time before all shipboard systems will display both AIS A&B. Also, most ships only get a text display of AIS information - not the same - or nearly as useful as seeing it on the chartplotter.

Thanks Sea Gull....I was hoping that would be the case......and I end up liking it as well...Think I will bite the bullet and get one...receive only...for the time being....may upgrade when they have they bugs worked out....
Appreciate the input
Pete
