Captain Schettino of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia has been found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Prosecutors called Schettino "a reckless idiot"
"He was given 10 years for manslaughter over the deaths, five years for causing the shipwreck when he steered too close to Giglio Island, one year for abandoning the vessel when hundreds were still aboard, and one month for downplaying the collision to maritime authorities, delaying the arrival of help."

Only a year for getting on the first lifeboat he could, well before his pax and crew, huh? One year is not even close to enough. Then again, he has to live with that shame for the rest of his life. Coward like that has no place near the ocean.

I think some will think it just, others won't. Consider me in the second camp. I've come to realize that it's a small percentage of the population that has ever truly been responsible for another's life. The verdict will split down this population. If a guy like this was ever truly judged by his peers as I would define them, the verdict would look a wee bit differently.
