Last year I got the bright idea to install larger wiper on my existing arms it never occurred to me this would be a problem. Apparently I excided the size that the motor could handle and it broke the plastic gear in both motors. I remove the motors today and found the problem but I can't find parts for these motors anywhere AFI-1000. The motors are about $175-200 each and the gear would likely be a few dollars. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction and if need be should I replace the with the same model I don't want to over size the motor for the power available like I recently did with my fresh water pump.
 
If you're looking for just the gear, you're out of luck AFI doesn't sell replacement parts. If you are currently using a 1000 series and want to up grade you'll have to move to the model 1.5 or 2.0 since the 2000 series is no longer available.

The model 1000 will power a 16" arm and 16" blade.

The model 2000 is no longer available.

The model 1.5 will power a 20" arm and 20" blade.

The model 2.0 will power a 24" arm and 24" blade.

At least the 1.5 and 2.0 models are 2 speed.

How much more power does the 2.0 draw? I don't care about the two speed I don't want to change out the switches to control the speed. My concern is I don't want to rewire and/or replace breakers to up size the motor.

It sucks that they don't sell parts!!

After doing a little research I'm guessing that the 1.5 and 2.0 is the amps that they draw I don't think I would have a problem supplying 2 amp instead of the 1 amp currently but I may have to check the breaker before I order $400 worth of parts.
 
AFI publishes the stall current is 10 amps for the 1000, 13 amps for the 1.5 and 10.5 amps for the 2.5 models. The 10.5 for the 2.5 model doesn't make sense to me unless it's a geared down version. I don't have that information.
 
That would make more sense but the ads list them as 1.5A and 2.0A which sounds very low to me! If the 2.5 is truly 10.5 then I would spend the extra for it.
 
2.5 stats this is not bad at all I would not have to rewire for this load I believe I have 16 gauge wire feeding it now.

If the gears are able to be salvaged, would it be possible to have new ones built with a 3D printer?
 
The problem is the shafts get a little corrosion and there's no way to lube them. [well, there is with the cable oiler method, that's what I use] The gear appears to be nylon I don't see why it couldn't be printed with a 3D printer.
 
The 2.5 model is a little pricey. I see it for around $300. The 1.5 looks like $200.
 
The problem is the 2000 kit only works for a small wiper so you end up ducking to sea out of the little area that it wipes but something is butter then nothing.
I skipped over the 1.5 and went straight to the 2.5 I will take a look at it also.
 
I pulled both motors today and oddly I have one that is 1.5" and the other is 2.5" with a one inch spacer I have no idea why, I don't believe that if I remove the spacer the 1.5" would be an issue. It's as if that is what they had on hand so that's what they used it makes no sense at all but I will have to double check by trying to install the old 1.5 in the spot that the 2.5 was before I place an order.
It looks like this will be yet another B.O.A.T. buck!
 
I'd say the gear is fairly proprietary. It has the mounting points for a plate that determines sweep and park side. I scored a used gear on another boating site to recondition one of my wipers. The trick is to use the "cable oiler" method to lube the shafts once a year or so. That helps prevent the overload problem.

The 1000 and 2000 series motors have a brass within a brass shaft. The newer models 1.5 and 2.5 have a stainless steel shaft. Perhaps that will improve longevity.

This is not an ordinary gear I wish it was it has a molded cam to it to trigger the end of cycle. I did not have time to came for pricing today I will try tomorrow and order the parts. I will likely replace both arms as well as the wiper. I also have to replace the hose for the washer it seems to have dried out and has a view cracks in it but this is an easy fix I had the seem problem when I bought the boat I think I still have enough spare hose to do the job again.
 
I went up to the boat to double check the shaft length for the motors I have one that is 1.5" and one that is 2.5" I think they must have ordered the wrong one and decided to made a spacer to make it work. The spacer is so well made I thought it was a factory piece. I took the motor with the shorter shaft and put it in place of the 2.5" without the spacer and it fits perfect. Tomorrow I plan to order two AFI 1.5 units with inch and half shafts, I will also buy new arms to go with them should be a quick install but these things never seem to go easy!
