Those are pretty amazing conversions.

And it's equally amazing there were any planes left intact to fly after all those landing "incidents."
 
Hopefully they'll find some J-3 still intact. A person could hover a few feet over the deck as the Carrier shuttled along at 40+ Knots.
 
someone correct me if I'm wrong...but didn't the Langley do some of it's earliest training missions on the Great Lakes when first commissioned?
 
I believe Geo Bush Snr was trained on one of the converted lakers on Lake Michigan. As well the lakers were converted bulk carriers.
