I'm thinking of getting AIS transponder for my boat. Is there any boaters here that have AIS and use their boat in the Great South Bay? I just don't want to spend the money and be the only one out that has it.

Tim,
Funny u bring that up. I'm having an AIS transponder installed next week ( send and receive ) For the bay id say its not money well spent. We boat in all kinds snot , Lots fog , lots rain. Those huge bulk carriers are very deceiving and the high speed ferry same ... So with some upgrades I'm doing it made sense.

Download the marine traffic app. Very cool to see and watch. Ull get the gist of AIS real fast

You realize you can use your phone to send and receive AIS signals.
Yeah not as good for offshore but for GSB it works fine

I don't imagine that many people on the bay are using AIS and I doubt it would be of much use on a busy weekend if everyone did. Unless you are doing ocean trips I don't really think it's worth spending money on for the bay.
