alpha 1 exhaust pipe bolt issue

ok, im doing a gimbal assy on a 1990 searay, why you ask, cause i'm an ass.
anyways, the gimbal i got has an offset bolt pattern in that is has 2 bolt holes on the bottom 1 on top & 1 on the side. the y pipe has conventional 2 & 2.
from what i've learned, this gimbal is from the mid 80's. i found a 3" y pipe with the right bolt pattern but it will not meet up with my exhaust elbows, i even have 3" to 4" elbows but no good.
can i get away with using only 3 of the 4 bolts? i know they wouldn't put them there if they didn't need it but what other solution is there?
tear this gimbal out & start over?
ive already installed new bellows, shift cable, trim switches, etc.,..
 
This is all a bit confusing. Did you change the outer transom plate and your 'Y' pipe won't fit it? Is the Y pipe your stock pipe? Why won't it match up to your riser/exhaust tubes?

If there's a leak at the attachment of the Y pipe to transom, you can potentially fill the boat with water.

Try explaining your problem so it's understandable to people that can't see the problem
 
ok, the gimbal, the complete gimbal plate, inside and out, the steering shaft was too far gone to save so it was taken off. the damaged gimbal exhaust had a standard bolt pattern of 2 on top, 2 on bottom . The replacement has an exhaust bolt pattern on the gimbal assy which is asymmetrical in that there are 2 bolts on the lower part , 1 bolt hole on the top & 1 on the side. here is an auction with a y pipe with this bolt pattern, problem is, it is a 3" exhaust, i purchased this type of pipe already but it wont line up t my risers.

Rirst it seemed you are trying to fit a GEN-1 pipe to a GEN-2 transom (gimbal) assembly/

When I first saw this thread, I thought "We need Charlie." He was first to reply, when I first posted here, what... 12 years ago... and still our GO TO when it comes to MerC stuff and making things fit.

I hope there wasn't a GEN-1.5

It isn't just that the hose size of the connector boot is different. The ANGLE it works at, is also different. Wondering if that's throwing things off.
Which Riser/Elbows do you have?
 
To answer your question directly - no, do not use just three bolts. If you do so, it will start leaking at some point.
