Am I the only poor sucker out there goofy enough to bother restoring an old 1974 25' Monterey?

You might be, but you're not the only poor sucker who's ever restored an old Carver. There's another site run by a guy in Canada where old Carver owners often post. House rules prevent me from linking to it, but you can do a "Yahoo" search on "Carver Mariner Sea Weed" and you'll find it. It deals mostly with the 28s of that time period, but there are other boats listed there and construction methods are the same...

I did a deck-off restoration of a 1975 2895 Mariner about 17 years ago. It was a killer, but we did get an additional 12 years out of the boat before we sold it. Had I known enough to do the job right we'd still have it, but some of our materials choices didn't hold up...

Ask me anytime about questions you might have and I'll do my best to share some best practices. Good luck with your project!!!

PS - please share pictures with the group!!!

Thank for the input. I'm to the point of exterior wise, just clean up and add the pinstripes and reinstall the swim platform. Interior, I have to go through the head, this is the area that I have no knowledge of, so I've been putting it off. Carpet windshield reinstallation and cleanup. The helm is 90% I need to finish the mahogany storage bins on the sides, rewire the engine compartment and batteries, and reinstall the motor. Close, yet so far away. As soon as I get back to it, I will definately post some pics. And thanks for the hookup with the website. Dan

There is some info on that site but its not posted on much.. Your on the right site for that plumbing work.. many have battled that foe here.

I echo your sentiments about the lack of posts on the other site, but thought it was still useful because there are more older boats referred to over there than are seen here, plus they have a lot of pics. The guy that runs it even has a CD available with pictures galore of old Carvers, which may be useful for reference...

I wish they'd all join this site, though, because it would be quite a bonanza.

As for plumbing, definitely check out the section of BoaterEd on Sanitation and the like, as there are many resources here to address your issues. Plus Carver used many of the same heads throughout the 1970s and '80s...

I thought that was the process... boat in the summer, restore in the winter!
(1982 Carver 3607AC here)
