Anchor Shackle Size?

I'm using a 35lb anchor with a 5/16" chain. I have a 5/16" shackle I haven't attached yet for the anchor/chain connection. The shackle is rated for 1320 lbs load.

Think that's adequate for for a 43' 20k boat?

Thanks,
Paul

I'm LOLing because I misread the thread title as "ankle shackle size" and thought someone was under house arrest.

Carry on.....

The SWL and WLL of the shackle SHOULD be matched to the chain, but I've always personally preferred to go up a size and use a good wide bow shackle - leaves room for tie downs to securely house the anchor, attach trip lines, etc.

I always use one size up as long as it will fit the chain and not get stuck on the roller. Don't forget the safety wire.

+1 on matching the working load of the shackle to the rode (or upsizing if possible)

To address the question.

Ground tackle needs to be matched to the application.

Seems like a light setup for a 43' vessel.
Starting point recommendations for a working anchor would point to:

Nominal Anchor size: 40#-Danforth / 45#-Plow / 40#-Delta
Rode: 3/8" Chain (1/2" rode if not all chain)

This is nominal for moderate wind/wave with good bottom conditions with decent scope.
Storm setup would bump up (at a minimum) the anchor size.

All depends on your cruising style..
If you're only out for the day in protected waters with good bottom conditions, your setup would probably work fine.
However, if you do a lot of overnighting and conditions may change (ie: storm, crappy bottom conditions, etc.) I'd go prefer to have a beefier setup.

That's just my opinion.. (but I do sleep well at night on the hook...)

The 5/16" matches the factory rigging. I had to be sure the chain rode fit into the gypsy. That said, we indeed boat on an inland lake in fair weather and generally have a sand/mud bottom.
