Hello all,

In an earlier post I indicated that the inlet pump shaft seal on my Crown Head Deep Draft appeared to be leaking at the seam between the motor and the impeller housing.

This morning I went to the marina and purchased a new inlet pump housing complete with a new seal, new gasket, new check valve ball and spring.

After installation it is still leaking, seemingly from the same spot. Any ideas what I could have missed?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Jeff

1) Worn shaft on the motor?

2) Check to be sure the paper gasket between the brass pump cover plate and the plastic pump housing hasn't torn around one of the holes where the screws go through. If there is a tear in the paper gasket, the water will follow the screw toward the rear, and it will leak out at the exact same place in the rear, center, where it would leak if the seal has failed.

Cure: remove the 4 screws and dry everything out well. Be sure the paper gasket is good and dry. Then take a small amount of silicone sealant and smear it on the face of the plastic pump housing. Just a slight film of it, spread evenly on the face of the housing - like greasing a cookie sheet. Then set the paper gasket in place, and rub it a bit so that it sticks to the silicone and stays there. "Butter" a little more of the silicone sealant on the face of the paper gasket. Put the brass pump cover in place, then push the 4 screws gently through. Thread the screws in until the head of each screw touches the brass cover. Don't tighten the screws. Wait a few hours until the silicone cures. Then snug up the 4 screws. But don't overtighten them and strip out the threaded holes in the motor housing! If the threads in any of the holes in the motor housing become stripped, you're SOL!

Thank you VERY much, Vic! It never occured to me that it could be coming from the other side. I will give this a try on Friday and Saturday and then report back.

I just took the housing apart again. I decided to try running the motor with the pump housing off and, unfortunatly, found that my leak is coming from the motor shaft itslef. Is there a seal on the waste side that needs to be replaced, or am I ready for a new motor?

If the macerator shaft seal is leaking on the opposite end of the motor, the water can go right through the motor and possible come out the other end, where the motor shaft comes out. If that's the case, the motor is shot - or will soon be, when the motor's ball bearings begin to rust. Your best bet then, would likely be to avail yourself of Raritan's Crown Head Factory Exchange policy. For details, see sticky at the top of the page. Changing out just the motor is extremely labor intensive, and will elicit many salty remarks from you.
