Are shift/throttle cables universal

I am replacing my 90hp 2000 Johnson Ocean Series with a 2000 honda BF90A.

I see the steering cable is universal but what about the throttle and shift cables? Can I re-use what I have or do I have to find and snake in replacements?

This is on a 17' SeaHunt 172

This post seems to highly recommend not trying to adapt but use the correct Honda dash control and cables with proper Honda end fittings.

Doesn't answer your question but a buddy of mine just replaced a 150 Evinrude with a 200 Yamaha 4-stroke on a 21 WA and the installer used the same cable steering but replace everything else with Yamaha. On the dash the tach was replaced with a multi gage from Yamaha. I wouldn't be surprized if the throttle/shift aren't drive by wire?
