My wife and I have just returned from the Toronto Boat Show and like the Regal line of boats. We are considering the Commodore 2665.
However, we were warned about the step hull (or fas Trac Hull or Ocean Trac hull as Regal calls it) design from a Crownline rep. He cautioned that while the design works well on plane in a straight line...it's downright dangerous while in a turn. He suggested that, while in a turn the boat will "slide" and the stern will "dip"...possibly even below the surface.
The reason for this, according the rep, is less surface area in contact with the water, therefore less friction to hold the boat in a turn.
He even went as far to say that there were pending lawsuits against Regal over the design.
Ironically, Crownline also has incorporated the step hull design on some of their boats...but have patented some sort of chine or tab to prevent this problem.
Is there any truth in this? As a Regal owner, have you encountered problems with the step hull design, turning or otherwise.
Thanks,
Norm
