silly question, is it possible you picked up debris on one wheel/rudder that cleared or was the turn too sharp?
I'm going to assume you have raymarine equipment that is original to the boat. the fluxgate is hardwired to the AP head unit, although possible, its unlikely the connection may have come loose but its worth checking.
in earlier years regal mounted the head unit under the dash, not a good location to avoid moisture. the AP head unit is not IP rated and really needs to be mounted below decks.
if you can rule out bad/loose connections it may be worth sending the head unit, the control head and fluxgate to raymarine to have them bench test all.
few things bother me more than having doubts about the AP especially if i'm in water that I don't know extremely well. keeping watch is great, but what is the point in having an AP if you cant bank on it keeping you on course/track.
