Guys,
Heading north in the babylon cut where does the 5 mph zone start ? I dont see any signs yet i have always slowed right at the meeting of the east west state channel. I ask this as just west of the babylon cut is a 5 mph sign at the guys bay house. East of the babylon cut the sign is passed dicks. So anyone coming north and then heading east or west has no 5 mph sign that I see ? Am i wrong ?

Rob

There used to be a sign on the island there to the west heading south.
Just like in Lindy cut, some signs are missing.
I think Irene took out the signs and since I think Lindy and Babylon cuts are town channels, there is no rush to put them back!

And you say North, but I think you mean South?

Heading North in the Babylon Cut and heading East I slow down just before Frank & Dicks. If I'm heading North in the cut and turning West, I don't slow down. The 5MPH sign in front of the bay house may of been put up by the owner, I'm not sure it's official.

If you check your NOAA chart, there is a remark that states for the State Boat Channel, the speed limit is 12 knots for the entire channel except for Anchorages and Basins where there is a 4 mph speed limit. That being said, that 12 knot speed limit was probably written before boats got up on plane. The key here is "Anchorages and Basins" thats still enforced.

By the way, if you are heading in the State Boat Channel between the RM Draw bridge and Frank & Dicks, you will see numerous "5 MPH" signs. Those signs were put up by the home owners in that area about 10 years ago. I ignore those signs as they were put up without any authorization. Again, go by your chart..."Anchorages and Basins"...there is nothing written about bay houses.

I just read that post from Art, It was posted in 2001. Those are the signs i referred to in my above post. They were put up by the homeowners overnight, not by the town. At the time, Seatow contacted the Town and County about the signs and no one offered to take them down since they did not put them up. I remember shortly after that, someone painted "X" marks over the "5 MPH" and the next week they were replaced.

YES....HEADING SOUTH. Thanks for catching that mistake!

If they were heading north, from the babylon cut, there is no way you are going past frank and dicks, unless you pass frank and dicks then get into the babylon cut.

Anyways, if you are heading south, and turn east, its 5mph, if you turn west its a free for all

If you are indeed heading north in either cut, you would run into the channel, so no 5mph..

I still say both channels North or South between the islands are 5 mph.
I know Lindy Cut has signs, Babylon Cut doesn't but I always go slow there as well.

Its the same as the Amityville Cut isnt it? Just further east...?

LOL... My bad, yes SOUTH guys sorry....

Adam , there was never a sign in the babylon cut heading north right before the state channel ?

Rob

Eventhough I am not Adam, I dont believe there was a sign in the babylon cut

When I used to go that way heading south in the Babylon cut I slowed down before reaching Frank and Dicks, or if there was other traffic coming across heading east or west. Heading west most people speed up just after Frank and Dicks whether they are heading west or to the Babylon Cut. The 5mph zone starts at the island at the Lindenhurst cut, that isn't the case for the Babylon cut.

Ok, I thought both islands were the same due to erosion issues.
My bad.
So I wonder why Lindy Cut is 5 mph, there used to be a dock there a long long time ago but it's long destroyed.
Maybe there is no reason for a 5 mph zone there either. Would be nice to stay on plane threw there.
