I have a 2004 Four Winns 195 Funship with a Volvo Penta 5.0 engine with about 395 hours on it. Our boat has started knocking very noticeably whenever it’s in neutral. When you bring it up to speed the noise is gone. Prop is in good condition. I’m not a mechanic but have some average mechanical skills. Sounds to me like knocking is coming from stern drive location not the engine. Any thoughts as to where I should start? Also, it is a definite knocking sound, not a high pitched whining sound if that helps. Thanks.

I have no current experience with the combination you describe, but, decades ago, with mercruiser I/O, you would be describing a failed sterndrive U-joint bearing failure.

You might want to consider checking the equivalent on your set up.

Sounds like the bearing on the bell housing to me. Not sure why it would go away under load. It you probably need to pull the drive and check the shaft for play

Does it get worse if you turn the to either side to full lock?

Pull the drive and check the gimbal bearing and u-joints.
Good time to lube the u-joints.
