An unfortunately common occurrence:

While I am fairly confident about what happened ( too early to be sure ) a few things to keep in mind:

Keep watch.

Wear "kill switch lanyard"

Don't "just" follow the Rules of the Road, be responsible and take care.

This was almost certainly an easily prevented occurrence.

You can have fun even while being safe.

What is the CC dragging or was that put in the water as a snare? I am pretty sure there is a bottom rig at the transom so the CC may have been fishing. If so the CC helm may have been unattended, the sailboat cut infront, or the CC changed course while the fisherman was unaware and boom. We had a CC turn right across our course which we had been on for hours crossing the stream. I turned the diial so we just missed his lures which were quite obvious. It was enough to make him think he was going to lose them and he yelled at us as though he was a "stand on" commercial fishing boat. I "politely" corrected him and let him know we were on that course for many hours before he cut across ours.
