Bedding underwater hardware

I removed my raw water strainers so I could clean them up before relaunching. The area where they mount looks like it was not painted before the boat was originally launched when it was new, so a lot of growth accumulated inside of the strainers.

My question is this, can I apply antifouling paint to that area, and then apply the bedding over the paint, and then reinstall the intake strainers? Or does the bedding have to come into direct contact with the gelcoat to adhere properly?

You can paint first. You are not counting on adhesion. You are going for sealing. So after the paint is dry apply 3M 101 Sealant and don't over tighten the hardware. JS
