One of my favorite things to do when we cruise around Southern New England, is to wake up before everyone else and walk over to the local harbor side coffee place. I am not a conisure(sp) of coffee, so dont judge my picks based on their java, its more about atmosphere with me.

Some of the favorites on my list so far are:

1. Edgartown - Espresso Love - crowded and a little expensive, but great coffee, muffins, and bagels, and fun to people watch.
2. Newport (Banisters Wharf) - Coffee Grinder- right on the water, literally, don't trip on the owners dog.
3. Block Island (in town)- Old Post Office bagel shop - Have patience with the season help, their english is not so good, but the bagels and scones are.
4. Block Island (New Harbor)- Paynes Dock - What can I say...donuts so greasy, the bag they come in would be considered a toxic wast site. You will be tempted to eat three or four...consult your physician first.

Anyone else have any favorites?

Dan

Essex -- Olive Oyls - best coffee donuts and specialty breakfast sandwiches. Have array of cheezes, meats, and other gourmet goodies for the rest of the day. Walk around afterward - enjoy the historic New England town setting.

I'm a huge believer that at most times during our lives, it's the small things we routinely enjoy that inspire the warmest memories. With all due respect to Dan's favorite things, I cannot relate to waking up before anyone else and walking ashore to a coffee shop for that first cup of coffee.

I typically wake up before my wife, and while savoring the soft motion of the boat and peaceful solitude of a calm morning on the water, I begin the ritual of making coffee onboard. After boiling spring water over the gas stove, I prepare the first cups using our coffee press, and freshly ground roasted beans. If the aroma dosen't get her out of bed, that's where she gets served.

With our second cup, our appetites will determine which onboard breakfast delicacies I will prepare, typically enjoyed topside. In my opinion, there is no better waterfront coffee shop.

Sounds great.

Due to small boat with no galley, my favorite is Block Island, but need to wait for Aldo to make his rounds to serve us coffee. Something about early morning, sitting, looking out in the harbor with a hot cup.

Unfortunately, my wife does not partake in the morning ritual of the needed caffiene dose and prefers to "sleep in" versus my usual early morning wake ups...so like Dan I enjoy that quite first of the morning walk...I'll second Spike on Olive Oyls in Essex, but will also add "The Captains Cup" just up the street in Essex also...a quaint, quite little place with a few nice wooden ship models, nice view of main street and some decent coffee varieties...Can't wait!!!

My coffee adventure is as much about checking out boats in the harbor as it is savoring the coffee

Like Steve, I'm the early riser in my house. My favorite place is my boat. Make the coffee, quick run to the local marina/store for the morning paper, back to the middle of the lake where I cut the engine and drift while reading about the latest Red Sox win. Nothing better!

For coffee shops/breakfast, the Wolfeboro Diner or Alton Bay Diner.

Good start Dan. At first I started to think about our coffee rituals also. Then Steve from True Blue chimed in and he hits it right on the head. My wife and kids get up before me and the smell of the freshly brewing coffee usually awakens me as the kids head off in the tender or Kayaks. I usually drift into full awakening in the captains chair glancing at the GPS or the nereby boats. Aldo and on-island coffee is reserved for afternoon walks or pick me ups.

Any excuse for a boat ride...........
