Block Island, Where is everybody ???

Went to Block Island yesterday, and was suprised at how few boaters where there. Almost all of the town moorings in New Harbor were available. The weather was ideal and this was Saturday on Memorial Day weekend. I'm certanly not complaining. It was very peaceful. I'm just curious. Are boats just not in the water yet?
 
I guess Bob changed his mind? Maybe all the warning we all gave him scared off everybody else!

The seas were calm, so a ride to BI must have been smooth. Hamberg Cove on the river was really pleasant this weekend- and there were many open bouys - not too many boats. I would say in my marina, about 30% of the boats were not yet launched - possibly due to the flooding this spring.

Last night - a sailboat at dusk, fired off a very loud cannon. Scared the crap out of us, as we were close by and were not expecting it.
 
BI is usually quite dead over Mem Day Weekend. Most shops and restaurants literally opened for the season this weekend. It's a great weekend to be there precisely because there are so few people. It's basically not possible to sleep on your boat over 4th of July weekend for example. The drunks and punks are howling at the moon all night long.

I was out around Cape Ann and the Isles of Shoals in NH today, and around 2pm, it started getting snotty out there. Was the forecast for some fun stuff? I wonder if it kept some people way.
 
Sitting here in Greenport and have been thinking the same thing all weekend. Where is everyone?
 
We took Tortoise down to Quisset harbor in Falmouth to meet up with some family for the weekend and couldn't believe how empty it was!
What a weekend of weather.

We were introducing a new family member to boating and were blessed with perfect weather for it. Had a ball!

Hope this is just the beginning of great summer weather... But you never know :)

Same limited action at Cuttyhunk. Only saw 4 boats at the docks and open morrings on Sunday. Price of fuel is keeping everyone home and perhaps out of the water.
 
Our area was was also much lighter than expected for a holiday weekend. Seems a lot of people are either getting a slow start or not starting at all this year...
 
Bowline was empty, only our large raft-up and one other two boat raft until Monday, when we got some day boaters visiting.
 
Enjoy the space and freedom while it last.

One reason might be the weatherman screwed up again and called for worse weather than we had. Sun/Mon they called for scattered thunderstorms and I never even saw a drop of rain. For those of you that have been out in thunder storms before it will make for good dockside stories and some appreciation of mother natures strength thus keeping you at the dock when they're forecasted.

The block can be very cool for an overnighter this time of year also. Do you remember what the water temp was in B.I.S

Yes, water temp was quite cool. I'm guessing upper 50's.

But the seas were very calm as forecast on Saturday anyway. Perfect boating day.

From talking around, it seems that most of June is relatively quiet.

Yes, definitely enjoy it while it lasts.
 
We got a late start this year, just bottom painted on memorial weekend. Splashing this weekend hopefully. We will head to Block atleast one weekend in June before all hell breaks loose. Nice and quiet in the pond. Fun to ride the bikes over the deserted island without the fear of getting run over.
 
I was at Raystown. Anyway, I was told I needed a bigger boat to go to Block Island.
 
Bob, looks like you missed your window of opportunity! Remember, I told you that you could do it!
 
I went to Block the weekend before Memorial Day several years back and was amazed how quiet it was. Weather was beautiful and we were one of only about 5 boats at Champlins. BI Boat Basin couldn't even promise that their docks would be in (they were). I think for a lot of people who go to Block (including myself) it's a fairly long trip and it's still early in the season. Weather can be iffy, people have kids in school still, etc, and even though the boats are in a lot of people stay local until later in the season.
 
Maybe someday, just me and the guys so I don't have to worry about the wifey and kids.
