https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qHdPhkSSNQ A very interesting video of the art of boat docking.

I learned long ago that because of hull shape you can steer a boat while standing on the bow simply by leaning to one side or the other. The boat will go toward the opposite side of the added weight.

It is the effect of creating an asymmetric waterline.

You can sometimes judge a boat handler by his boat - but the snobs with the wine glasses in that video had it backwards. Couple years ago I was at the local boat ramp doing some business and somebody told me to 'watch this, you've gotta see this guy trailer that boat' pointing to a run down looking tri-hull older than me with a Merc outboard that might be older than my Dad (but it was running like a top). The guy backed his trailer down, got back on his boat, brought it around to the ramp where the trailer was, goosed the throttle then killed the engine, stepped off the boat onto the dock and walked up the dock to his trailer - where his boat was now sitting, perfectly centered, right against the bow stop. Next time I see that boat I'm getting out the camera phone in case he does it again (apparently he's been known to do that for years).

Some other people were appalled by it and insisted it has to be illegal, and it's reckless, and blah blah blah. I was so damned impressed I wanted to clap for the guy.

I'm betting those who were appalled lacked the same boating skills demonstrated by the guy with the old boat.
