Car have an odometer and shows how many miles it has on it. Average is 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year. Boat? They have hours? What is considered low hours per year vrs high hours. Do the hours on the boat have anything to do with pricing? Thanks

Average hours per year on a boat depends on a LOT of factors. Number one is probably the length of the season. Florida being year round and our northern friends have a 20 minute season ;)

We average between 120 to 150 per year in our area but we do boat from March to December. Given a choice I'd rather have a 3 year old boat with 300 hours than one with say only 50 hours. Boats that sit, rot. (In many ways)

Thats just my 2 cents. Lots of different view points thou.

I am in the process of getting a 1992 Regal Avanti 24 foot that has 321 hours. Did not know if this was cosidered low/ high or normal use. Thanks for your reply.

Number one piece of advise when buying a boat is to get a survey done. Make sure he/she is certified and has good references.

321 hours seems a bit light to me for a 15 year old boat. I'd expect to see more like 750. 15 years times 50 hours per.

Keep in mind most marine engines rust out before they wear out. Not trying to scare you off the boat. Just go in with eyes wide open and get a survey!

corrosion never sleeps... although your other thread indicates fresh water it's still an issue. Rubber also ages with time, not jsut hours. belts, hoses, etc...

I agree with rommer... 300 hours in 15 years is just as bad as 2000 hours. well, maybe not exactly as bad, but you get the picture.

average hours for the average boater is around 100 hours a year. indeed in places where you boat year round it will be higher, and fewer up north especially in bad years...

hours are only part of the pictures. type of use and mainteance is jsut as critical, just like a car.

at 15 years there are some thing you need to start to worry about like fuel tank, even is fresh water, and water gettting in transom and stringers.

a good survey is critical although in case of the fuel tank, there is often very little to see.

Is is 100% imperative that boats be pulled out of the water every year and stored? I plan on having all the proper maintenance done on the boat my local marina mechanic. Just like the fact that I did not have to rent an SUV, pull the boat from the house down to the marina. Unload boat and re-load and pull back to house for an afternoon of boating. The home we built is up on the top side of a mountain. The driveway is 900 feet from road and very steep. Just getting a car up is somewhat difficult. Pulling a 24 foot boat? Probably not going to happen. Plus the owner of the boat says it take at least three people to load this boat. I cannot do this with just be and my wife. I was just looking at the ease factor. If I had spent a lot of money on the boat I would hire a service to come and winter the boat for me. The current situation just seemed to fit. Nice clean boat- not too much money- already in covered slip. No waiting list, no looking all over the country for a boat and then having to have it shipping. If you were wanting to get into boating- how would you do it? Thanks,

trailering is a pain, I agree and with a steep driveway, forget it. unless you can store the boat on your land at the bottom of the hill.

it's indeed an ideal situation... starter boat, covered slip, etc... the problem is lack of use. you need someone to keep an eye on the boat, fire it up at least twice a month, making sure the bateries are charged, etc... covered slip means that rain water isn't issue but you still have the risks of a mechanical failure letting water in. I guess some will say that's what insurance is for... :-)

give it a try and if you find that you're not using it enough, you can always bail out. buying used means you dont' have a lot to loose.

PascalG:

Why not give it a try. The slip has power to the boat. Worse case, does not pan out and move onto the next thing. Life is short. Renting a boat is not an option. They have Jonny boats or pontoon boats. Not to exciting. Thanks.
