Boat on Jetty at barnegat

Heard the Coast Guard call out on this Saturday all the way out in Sag Harbor on my way home. Wish I had a radio lkike that.

Looks like a cruisers, logo can be seen in third pic.

I really hate jetties... They are uncharted and always pop up out of nowhere when you least expect them...

Yeah, I agree, its a cruisers.
I read searay somewhere, but now I can't find it.
I think seatow edited it.
It's a 40' they said.

We where two miles away, heard the whole thing. Interesting how the tow boat operators argue with the CG, not argue so much but bicker. We altered course to stay clear, didn't see it. BI inlet, especially where the break in the jetti is, is very straight and well marked. Many small boats fish the north side of the break, guess it looks like you can go thru there, seen this more than once.

In other words he clipped the red marker 6? All charts show a wreck in between the marker and the visible jetty.

It looks well marked to me.

Here is the problem in my view.

In the old days when you went on a trip in your car you read a map, you wrote down directions and you followed them.
Today you get in your car, you program your GPS and you go.

Too many boaters think boats are like cars. They are not.
There are no roads and the boat won't tell you or warn you about anything.

Before I leave in boat I review the charts. Yes I review online but I do own a book of paper charts somewhere.
But I look. I study. For areas I am not sure about I get local advice. I write down any part I am not sure about on paper so admiral can read too me.
I rely on my eyes, my iPad charts and my Raymarine plotter. If I have a discrepancy between one of them I stop.

Clearly this guy either didn't know the area and didn't study his charts and didn't look at his plotter.
He used his eyes, he saw open water and he went.

Now he may of had a mechanical issue and if he did then we are all wrong. But for a twin engine boat to end up on submerged jetty he would have to have major failure.

Just my .02.

Your radio is fine, you just need an antenna a couple hundred feet above the water.

"He used his eyes, he saw open water and he went"
Bingo.

Couple years ago slip neighbor did the same thing, bow hit and he backed off, no running gear damage.
Keel was nice and notched into the fiberglass matting, lucky.

It is almost NEVER calm in this spot, talking 4 rollers as a constant, you get stuck on there, usually your done.
Guy in the cruisers is lucky he didn't lose the boat, looks like engine and gen might be done - at a minimum.

This is the north entrance to the bay, LBI tip.
The south tip isn't any better, there is a sand shoal that runs 2 MILES out - lose a couple boats there every year.

Getting through all of the shoaling on the inside headed out was no picnic as I recall.

I got towed in there when I lost my coupler in 2009 running home from Tuckerton.
Called for a tow because I knew it would be tough with one motor plus I was unfamiliar with the waters.

If I recall, My boat kept trying to ride up and overtake the seatow boat as he towed me in on the breakers. I had other motor in reverse to try and hold myself off of him.
Was not fun!

Current is strong. Following sea while inbound is dangerous. Traffic - slow traffic can put you in harms way. There are many commercial fishing boats, I always stay away from them. One time I got caught inline, following sea, couldn't go fast enough to keep away from the crest due to boats infront of me, took a bad roll in the 34 convertible. Nobody got hurt and the boat righted itself immediately, but that is the last time I entered the ocean with the kids onboard (ages 6 and 2 at the time). Still wont go out with them onboard to this day, current boat is 46 OAL.
Not worth it to me.
