Boat Sunk, (no not mine) did we save her, maybe ?

Yesterday, I did my daily check on my boat and was sitting at the helm talking on my cell with an LIYC member friend Billy. I look across the marina and said holy Sh#% Joe's boat has sunk; an older 28 foot Well Craft that he takes very good care of. The boat was under well over the cockpit and almost up over the helm.

No one was around at the time. It is winter ;-) Billy happened to have Joes cell # and I had many other possible #'s who could come. We made calls and a couple of friends showed up quickly along with the owner Joe, who was completely in shock.

We had a gas pump in the pool house and we began the task of pumping. It took about two hours and a bit of ad-lib fixes to get it afloat. Darkness set in and it got cold...

Today the boat was towed to a local boat yard and they began all the tasks to remedy the problem. They said that the boat was only under for about 3 or 4 hours and if under much longer the repairs would have escalated ten fold. Much of the interior and electrical may need to be repaired or replaced, but they did the magic on the engines and they started.

I get a call this afternoon from the owner thanking me…… I said thanks, but no need for that, that's what any boater would do, I hope.

Maybe the fact that I did catch it when I did saved it from a total loss. Who knows. He did ask what brand I drink :---)

No news on the cause yet.

Brad.....WOW that sucks. Let us know...when they determine the cause.

You did good. Do you know if the boat has I/O's? What about his bilge pump? Do you guys have electric all winter? Sadly,Walter is right a boat that goes down in salt water is doomed to a life of problems.

The boat is a Well Craft, but not like a typical cruiser style, not sure what model it is. It seems more like a fishing style with twin inboards and I believe strait shafts. The engines are way forward.

This is his # 2 boat in our clubs basin. He also has a 43’ and also not a typical model / brand from these parts. Forget what it is. The funny thing is that he checks on his boats more than most at the club. He turns on his main bilges regularly. He loves that 28, I think more than his 43’, he takes it out; the other is more of a floating condo.

No talk yet on cause, I think hush because of insurance issues. The weird thing was when we got the boat afloat; nothing seemed that obvious that would cause it to sink. Some think it may have had a small leak that we could not see since it was dark by the time we got it fully afloat; pump could not keep up and maybe got hung up under a small finger pier on his starboard side.

We do have electric all year, so the batteries should have been charged. But there could have been a failure.

I agree that the boat may never be the same, but it is a simple boat. The Boat Yard in Babylon said that since it was sunk for such a short time, they can bring it back to a normal condition.
 
Geez, another insurance job foiled can't people mind their own business? :)

Just kidding, just kidding...that's what I said to my friend when his boat almost sunk at the dock. His plug mysteriously came out of the hull...and he had been trying to sell it for a while.

We had one this year that was an old sailboat the owner barely took care of. Something penetrated the hull during a big storm...pushed through the bottom. We're still not sure what it was but since it's only two slips over from mine, I'm very concerned. It was a royal pain to get it afloat but being a sail boat, we removed the engine in time and there wasn't much left to be damaged (no upholstery, no galley/head, no electronics, very simple boat).

Glad to hear you got the engines working in short order. Hopefully it's not as doomed as you think.
 
Update... This boat ran this summer and he also supplied it for our dock work day last Saturday to help run lines for the ice eaters. I did not go into the cabin for the smell test, but it looks like it never sunk so he sure lucked out.

He did give me a bottle of Vodka. I think it was a re-gifted Christmas bottle... hey it’s the thought.. and as I recall back in January 07 it tasted just fine !!

Update... This boat ran all summer at LIYC and he also supplied it for our LIYC dock work day last Saturday to help run lines for the LIYC ice eaters. I did not go into the cabin for the smell test, but it looks like it never sunk so he sure lucked out.

He did give me a bottle of LIYC Vodka. I think it was a re-gifted LIYC Christmas bottle... hey it’s the thought.. and as I recall back in January 07 it tasted just fine !!

Excellent job. Always seems like theser things happen in AYC in the fall months when most of the boats are out of the water and there's not too many people around. Everytime I go down, I always take a gander at those boats still in.....nice job Radio....

Last week was the anniversary of the boat sink / save and he thanked me again… or maybe Mr. Bud did. The boat is still a floating.
