Boat wrapping?

This past weekend I saw a 42' boat that was wrapped and looked pretty good. I was told it was near end of life and scheduled to be redone. Supposedly the wrap only lasts for 5 to 7 years. Some simple math has thinking, I spend over $1000 a year having the boat waxed which wrap doesn't require it may actually make sense.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this?

Wow a 119 views and not a single response I guess boat wrapping is not a popular thing as of yet.

i'm confused, are you talking about canvas winter covers or shrink wrap?

The only "wrapped" boat I have seen was on a trailer transport on the Interstate.

My opinion might be entertaining, but otherwise, useless... ;)

Move South; boat all year...

There are lots of wrapped boats in S Florida. Normally, they have huge graphics involved and many have their fishing team name or logo.

I have no idea how they will hold up in the sun over time. Just like a nail can gouge gel coat, it can tear the wrap. I have heard it can be repaired but have never seen it done.

I would personally consider it as an alternative to painting when the finish it too far gone.

The wrap guy I spoke with a few months ago said they last 5 to 7 years on a vehicle in SW FL, longer on boat hulls.

I would love to have the gel coat redone on my boat but this would be big money!
The boat the I recently saw was done over 5 years ago and it still pretty good. If I don't have to wax the boat this in its self would be huge but the money I would save would pay for the the wrap over time. This seems like a win win to me!

Looks like a good idea, but I wonder what it costs.
I’ve heard, but not confirmed, that it cost about $2500.00 to wrap an average size car.
The other thing to consider is that the surface below the wrap needs to be in good shape because any imperfections will show through the vinyl.

The person I spoke to said it cost about $5000 to wrap his 42' cruisers. My boat is in great shape but there are section that the gel coat is getting thin and really should be sprayed. Wrapping sounds like it maybe a less expensive option.

$5000.00 sounds like a pretty good price for wrapping a 42’ boat.

There is a 27 or 28' Boston Whaler down the creek from me that was wrapped about 3 or 4 years ago. It is not a glossy finish, more like what they call "orange peel", still looks like when they put it on, cheaper than painting or gelcoat.

I would think it cost a lot more than $5k to wrap a 42’ boat. It cost me over $2,500 to get the front (hood, fenders, bumper, lights and mirrors) of my Porsche 911 wrapped in clear. For 5k it would be a no brainer to get my boat wrapped.

That is the price I was told buy the guy who had it done. I believe a car it much harder to work on. Also the clear chip guard it expensive material. Keep in mind this price it just to do the hull bellow the rub rail.

Car install takes more time wrapping panels, covering complex curves, cutting openings for various fog lights/headlights, air ducts, etc. A properly done job would also require several hours of paint correction to remove surface level contaminants and swirls prior to the film. A boat install from the rubrail down wouldn't be nearly as finicky or require the same level of prep or finish.
