Just spent NYE in Houghton, MI and it looked like a great place to boat. Can anyone comment on the boating in this area? Good boating, hazards, etc..

There are many places to visit and enjoy around Houghton/Hancock. Great marina right at the lift bridge downtown. You can start from there and go up to Lake Linden or down to pike bay in the southern part of Portage Lake. Its a 73mi trip out the north entry to Isle Royal which has stunning views and great fishing. Original canal was cut so lake freighters could take a shortcut if the weather was bad. Out the south entry you have Kewanaw bay and a short hop over to Marquette. We have made the trip several times out to the island, stay a week or two and than come back to Copper Harbor and around to the south entry and back to Hancock.

Excellent. I will look into planning a trip there this summer. Thanks for the info.

Another nice area for boating is the chain of lakes a little northwest of there which includes Elk Lake and Torch Lake. Clear blue water on Torch Lake.
