i'm about to haul out for a bottom painting and would like to install a bonding plate on the transom. i'm constantly loosing the zincs on the shafts, the moment they have any wear on them, they want to come off. how do you know what size plate to use, is there a science to calculating how many inches of zinc is neccesary?

VIC,
What is a bonding plate? Are you talking about an anode mounted on the transom, bonded to the bonding system to help with corrosion?

yes a zinc anode connected to the bonding system. usually mounted on the transom below the waterline.

Vic,
Most people use a 6 x 12 plate. They are pretty universal as far as size. I've mounted them with two 1/2 inch stainless allthread rods and bonded one rod inside to the bonding system. I mounted it just above the drain plug, and high enough that the allthreads cleared the stringer. Good luck.

Are you guys talking about a grounding plate? Normally seen on the transom of a boat? Connected to the boats internal bonding system? I doubt they'd be zinc, normally sintered bronze or copper.

I'm sure zinc would work but not really the correct application for that material on a wood or fiberglass boat. Dnyaplates or copper plates used as the bonding plate outside the hull have to be properly sized for the application as well if used for grounding SSB equipment and lightning.
