It is getting to be that time again to get bottom painting done. In my opinion it is like getting a new roof done on your home. I want an exceptional job done because I love my boat. I would like somewhere close to the Outrigger since we will be driving the boat in instead of trailering it to them. Has anyone had any good experiences on this type of work. I know it a pretty generic service, but I have heard stories of paint coming off after six months, etc. I want a good job done.
Thanks.

CatsMeow, like the article says below if you don't have access to a heated shed it is best to apply the paint when conditions in our area are 50-85 degrees F and humidity less than 65%. If you want the paint to stick and the best job I don't think that I would get the job done now in the winter unless the painter has access to a heated shed. I have built 2 boats and I can attest that the best results are obtained by following the paint manufactures recommendations. DD

CatsMeow, if you are having someone else paint the bottom for you I would recommend you put a few inspection waypoints in their process.
1- you sign off on surface preparation that they sanded it and the surface is clean
2- another sign off on painting day so you can be comfortable it is warm and dry enough
3- and the last after painting so you can see they didn't paint your sacrifical annodes, they dealt with any details around thru hulls.
In this tight economy you should be able to get someone to work with you and I would even tie progress payments with the sign offs. They might not like you looking over their shoulder but I think you will get a better job. DD

Bethel Harbor on Piper Slu has a good reputation for quality work. About 10 yrs ago, they had problems one year with the bottom paint not staying on the hull. The problem was traced to the chemistry of the actual paint they had used. They repainted every boat which came back to them with a legitimate complaint and I guess they then went to the paint mfg for reimbursement.

During the winter months Bethel Harbor runs a bottom painting special. They have a heated shed to do the work and an elevator/trailer system to haul your boat.

I no longer get the boat bottom painted because I installed and use an Air Dock boat lift.......
