I've read so much good things about Buff Magic and Pro polish. My question is: I'm repainting the stripe on the side of my Santigo and replacing the vinyl stripes as well. Should I take the stripes off after or before the Buff Magic? Last year I scraped some stripes off with a razer blade, took a long time. Is there a better way? Will the buff magic remove all the old wax so the new stripes will stick or should I use a de-waxing compound? Any thoughts?

Take the stripes off with a heat gun or good hair dryer, hit it with some acetone and then the buff magic. Put the new stripes on and polish.

Should be good that way.

You can also buy a vinyl stripe removal wheel from any good auto body store. They are made for the auto industry, and go in either an electric drill or air tool.

They are essentially a soft rubber wheel that you chuck into a drill, and feel a little bit like those gum erasers you ate in first grade. While made for autos, I took my boot stripe off last year with one.

It takes a little practice to get the hang of it, but its the fastest way to remove them - especially if the boat is older and the stripes have gotten brittle.

If you over do it, it is possible to burn the gel coat, but you have to really push down hard to do so. That is where the practice comes in. Start with light pressure, and only apply enough pressure to remove the stripes.

I completely removed 1 1/2" high of brittle stripes last year - both sides of a 32ft boat - in about an hour.

I jsut removed my 20 year old boot stripe with a little heat...pulled right off and brought the adhesive with it...very little cleanup. I was toying with the idea of putting the newest tape on, as Carver now paints on their boot striping, but it doesn't really match my midnight blue gel stripe.

Thanx for the info, Kenny, I had trouble with the color match and elected to go with a saphire blue stripe that was half the price off the web.$26.00 for 150 ft at 1". It looks like a good match for the saphire blue paint from Interlux. Hope it turns out OK. I will try both the wheel if I can get it and a heat gun. I had to paint as the blue was faded and already buffed to the point that the color was gone in some places.

Dan,
Thanks for the reply. Looks like a great website.
