Canal Day/Fest Boat party UPDATE posted 5-14-12

Another minor update. Just found out that they will not require dock pass wristbands this year to get on the docks. You still need to pay the $10 general admission to get into the Chesapeake Inn's property to get to the docks from land. If any ROs are visiting by land, and go to the Chesapeake Inn, feel free to stop by and join our little boat party on the dock. You won't need to call me ahead for a separate dock pass wristband anymore.

Well how did the weekend go? We were there overnight the weekend before but spent this weekend at the jersey shore. I have not heard of any problems. Did you get hit with any storms?

We were there in one of the slips at the Chesapeake Inn. Bobh came by for a visit, and helped put our canvas up before the skies opened up. We defnitely had several leaks around the canvas and had to have all hands on towel and leak patrol with about 6 or 7 aboard at the time. The wind supposedly gusted to about 70 nearby. I would guess about a 35 to 40 gust at the mosts in the basin. Not really bad, but I learned the next day that it was enough to push a long raft of anchored boats across the basin. One or two boats sunk, and had to be removed by crane the next day. I'm guessing too many boats off too few deployed anchors.

Overall, the weekend was hotter 'n hell. It was bobh's first Canal Fast, and as a Canal Fest virgin, he received the official Canal Fest welcome from the Canal Fest welcoming committee.

I was thinking of you. The wind was ridiculous on land, but I slept through it. They said it was a Derecho which I never heard of but say winds were upto 100MPH. Two flagpoles in front literally bent in half. I awoke to chainsaws at 5:30 and thought what the hell?? There were trees down all over the place. Had to fire up my generator. Did Chesapeake Inn keep power to the Docks with their big generators? Power came back on at 1pm but People in Elk Woods still don't have power today. There was one poor house that got hit by five separate trees.

As far as on land, very tame, although somebody broke their key off trying to get in my house instead of the Blue Max. I think the big thing they did was say no open containers on land. Kind of confirms your thoughts that the boaters aren't the issue as much as local idiots driving in and getting blind drunk.

Phil -

I heard that there were some really bad winds nearby. I think gusts were very localized. If it was 70 or 100 mph in the Corps of Engineers Basin, my canvas would have been gone. I had the whole camper canvas up. But, it could have been 100 near your house a short walk away, given the destruction. Very, very localized. Someone said they had a gust of 153 at the Bohemia River. Several sailboats were sunk. I'm not sure how that was measured with no weather stations down there.

The Chesapeake Inn did use generators, but they only powered the Inn itself..... not the docks. We had a room in the ShipWatch Inn, which had no power the whole night. Luckily, all the rain cooled it to about 75. As it was heating up the next morning, we were thinking of checking in to the Holiday Inn Express in North East, which had power. But, the power came on mid-day, and we remained checked in at the ShipWatch Inn.

We had two of those drunk land idiots mosey down to C-dock on Sat night, and try to start trouble. Andy the dockmaster and security dragged them out. Another brief scuffle Fri night that turned out to be another non-boater. My general rule is that if they have more tattooed skin than un-tattooed skin, they are generally non-boaters, and often looking to cause trouble.

By the way, we'll be staying at the Blue Max Inn this upcoming Fri and Sat nghts. We'll try not to jam those keys in your door! LOL! You should open the "Red Roof B&B" to compete with the Blue Max. There's only 4 B&Bs with a total of 28 rooms in town that are often filled up. ... Possible money maker there.

Anyway, we'll be watching the fireworks Friday night (July 6) from the T-Head of C-Dock where we'll be tied up for the night. Come on by if you'd like. Some friends from Richmond, VA will be joining us, too.

If anyone wants to join us for the fireworks tonight, we got switched over to D dock.

Sorry I got really busy and didn't check this board. Its better to email me. We actually watched them from Shaeffer's deck but would have had a better view from my deck (they changed the location, we usually go to a house in the north with an unobstructed view. Their deck is going to be nice. I heard about the incident Friday night. What amazes me is how cheeky some people are. I could not imagine trying to board somebody's boat, much less with a lit cigarette. What could you be thinking? Oh that's right not a thing.
