We're planning a trip for this weekend. My sister is renting a house starting Saturday. We plan on tying up behind the house. We did this three years ago and the kids had a blast.

If we head out Friday (due to better weather) could we tie up to a canal wall for the night where there are no homes? The house she rented is 243 Melody Lane, Lavallette, NJ. Its near the end and if you check google maps there's at least 100' of what looks like town land just to the west.

Do you think we would be breaking any laws or otherwise upset people? What's the proper protocol? I know most people at the shore are there to relax but I don't want to upset anyone.

Alternatively, Can anyone reccommend a marina in the Manasquan River or just south of the PP Canal?

Walshie:

Generally speaking, the answer is no, you can't just tie up to any bulkhead....privately or town owned.

In the pic below, I'm not sure that any of that dock isn't privately owned....

I would suggest that you call the owner of the house your sister is renting and just ask if you can tie up a night before....I don't see why they would not let you this early in the season.

Thanks, good to know. I prefer to travel on Saturday or if we do go early, to break up the trip and stay near the Manasquan inlet.

The wife prefers to get there and setup camp.

Do you have a suggestion for a marina in the inlet?

Chris:
I suspect the 100' of bulkhead to the west of the house your sister is renting is jointly owned by the 243 Melody lane and the house on the southwestern corner across the street. I doubt that property is township land. I also don't think I would tie up to that bulkhead to spend the night, being as your sister doesn't have a lease until Saturday.

I think I would still come down Friday as you planned, but I would anchor out Friday night. I am assuming the boat is the 33 Silverton in your profile. If you look at the west side of the bay from Lavallette you will see Cattus Island. It is a nice spot to anchor for the night and then you could make your way over to Lavallette on Saturday morning, after you Sister takes possession of the house.

Chris:

There are a number of marinas on the Manasquan just inside the inlet. I've no personal experience with a transient slip at any of them, but one of the big marinas that comes to mind, close to the PP Canal, is Clark's Landing. They have a restaurant on premises and a fuel dock with generally good prices. They may have a transient slip available this time early in the season.....I know they fill up in season.

There are a number of marinas when you enter the Manasquan Inlet. On the right is Hoffman's Marina, Brielle Yacht Club just passed that after the railroad bridge, and Clark's Landing is close to the entrance of the canal. On the other end of the canal is Dale's Yacht Basin. In Lavallete there is Ocean Beach Marina which is just around the corner from the house you'll be staying at.

Thanks guys. Like I said, I prefer to either travel Saturday or break up the trip by staying overnoght near the inlet

If we do go on Friday and the bride gets her way, ill give a call to the rental agent or check into the marina next door.

Its good to have options.

Ps - I remember Hoffmans and Clarks from the last time, easy to find

Made it to clarks, 5 hrs in total. Ocean was rough so we did 15 knts. All was good till we got to the inlet and some piece of dung swamped us. It was bad! A CG boat saw the whole thing and pulled up to them but did not board. When the CG passed us I gave them a WTF (arms in air screaming what was that!). They told me they "talked to him".

Nice! I guess the CG is mirroring Obama.

Gping for clams now to chill.
