When leaving Cuttyhunk and heading to MV is it advisable to fore go Canpitsit and heads east to Quicks Hole for any specific reason?

I have been on the beach/rocks at the far eastern end of Cutty and have witnessed boat transiting this passage, but I have also heard several warnings against using it. From the beach it looked to be pretty well marked.

Thanks
Dan

All depends on the size of your vessel and the tide. I use this channel often and have a 36' powerboat. Channel is well marked but narrow so use it at high tide first. Saves 20 minutes on the way to the vineyard for me.

I too have seen traffic thru Canapisit but have never gone thru myself. I have read the warnings that it's not advisable (in a couple of cruising guides) and I'm not looking for a challenge. Quicks Hole is only 5 minutes up and it's wide open and easy to navigate. And if you're going anywhere but Menemsha, I can't imagine it saves all that much time.

I've taken our 13' Whaler through there with no problem, but also reached the conclusion I would not take the Hatt through there based on the soundings and currents I witnessed. As Prospective said, there isn't that much of a potential time savings, especially if you are headed to Vineyard Haven or beyond. We used to go to Cutty and the islands a lot when we summered in Westport Harbor.

Man, I wish we could have made it up there this year!
