Witnessed a small CG boat pull over Jet skiers on sunday off Short beach. They tied the jet ski on the hip and with 2 passengers on the jet ski the CG vessel proceeded at speed to head towards CG station short beach. Anyone that's ever owned a JET SKI or towed one knows they tend to submarine. Well that's exactly what happened and both kids got caught between the boat and the jetski. THANK GOD the helmsman killed the motors otherwise it would have been a tragedy ! I haven't a clue what they were thinking .

You should write a constructive letter to the district commander describing what you saw and suggesting that they teach their crews about the differences between towing a standard vessel and a wave runner/jet ski.

You might save someone's life in the future.

Where and when was this, and are you sure it was CG and not CGAux or another agency?

Risk to people always trumps risk to equipment, and leaving POB on the ski was a bad idea. But also!!! There are specific procedures for towing a ski, and they differ by ski. So in addition to the personnel risk, there may have been risk of (or even actual) engine damage to the ski.

If Aux, do they have jurisdictional authority's? A few bad apples in VA thought so. The judge thought differently.

Judges aren't always right either. With that said, Aux authority is "please" and "thank you." But, if you don't like what I asked you to do I can always call the guys with the machine guns that don't have to say please and thank you (but should) or local law enforcement.

Laws differ by state which is why I posed the first question and defined the Commonwealth of VA as a scenario in which perceptions of legal authority and actual legal authority were not even close.

Not to mention you can do a lot of engine damage to a jet ski towing it at speed without clamping off the cooling hose.

Nope, they don't. I missed the part where this happened as part of an enforcement action. Was late, I was half asleep.

Exactly what raises my curiosity!

From what I observed, the Jet ski guys were doing donuts just off the marina that's located there which is also right in front of the coast guard station. I'm speculating the CG was going to tow them to the station for inspections/ citations. Simple thing would be meet me at the dock . But who knows what the banter / conditions were. . Who knows but they made a very unsafe decision.

From what I saw in the waters just off Navy Pier this weekend, nothing surprises about Jet Skis. Must be something about the raw power of those things that attracts destructive behavior in some. Guilty as charged as a much younger man!

True, laws differ, but our authority doesn't. We are civilians with zero law enforcement authority. I can "enforce" a safety zone, but its with pleases and thank yous. Sometimes my brother and sister members forget this.
