We've been at our marina for about a year and a half. I love the place because it's in a location with great views, its laid back, there are relatively few boats. I'm considering leaving because there is another down the river which has power, wifi, cable included in one rate. The current place has no cable, wifi and charges extra for power. It's alot cheaper to move. The drawback is that we won't have the view in the new place and it's brimming with rules and regs although most of them I don't mind.
The main reason for moving is that our current place is "full service'" and we have to pay extra if we don't use their people for repairs and service that we can't do. I'm concernrd about advice and info I've gotten from the folks here. We bought an older boat and it was laid up for a couple of years and the fuel is probably bad. The dockmaster advised me to pour a bottle of rubbing alcohol into each 200 gallon tank to help with moisture problems. From what I've read in the engine forums, that's the last thing I should do. Thats my first question.
Secondly, nearly every employee there has advised me to do repairs and maintainance "behind management's back" so to avoid charges imposed for hiring outside help.
Third, the dockmaster told me once we painted the bottom we wouldn't need a diver for a year to clean the bottom. Is that right???
We were quoted $19 per foot for ablative paint and the price came in at $23 per foot due to "excessive growth". We are going ahead with this because the boat is out of the water and to go elsewhere would offset any savings.
Nearly all the service/repairs on our old boat came in a little higher than quoted but the explanations always seemed reasonable and the amounts relatively small.
This marina is almost always late as far as doing what they promise but I've always written this off to "boating".
I guess the laid back thing that attracts me is also a problem. Any feedback though on the alcohol/ fuel thing and the bottom paint price will be appreciated.
