Maybe someone else can pipe in and talk about that but I was talking to a DNR officer Sunday evening and he said there were 2 drownings up there.

Here you go.

Chesapeake City Drowning Victim Identified
Chesapeake City, Md. -- The Maryland Natural Resources Police are investigating a fatal boating accident that occurred on June 24 at 8:25 pm at the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, Chesapeake City.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Robert Vernon Baron, 27 from Bear, Delaware fell into the water after jumping from a docking vessel onto a pier. Two people from the vessel jumped into the water and could not locate Baron.
Baron’s body was recovered at 10:15 p.m. by the Susquehanna Hose Company Divers. Baron’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsy.
The Maryland Natural Resources Police Special Operations Division is continuing the investigation into the accident. Baron is Maryland’s tenth boating fatality of the year.

It was not at the Chesapeake Inn. It was next door at one of Chesapeake City's town docks...the one just beyond the Tiki Bar and beyond the Chesapeake Inn's "A" dock.

Sea Bitt - You might want to change the subject line to "Chesapeake City Death", rather than Chesapeake Inn death, as that is not the case. During the Canal Day party, the Chesapeake Inn already catches lots of crap from the town over boaters in the basin, even though the Chesapeake Inn has no control over those boaters in the basin or at the town docks. The Chesapeake Inn can only control their own docks.

NEVER EVER jump or let anyone jump from boat to dock until the boat is secured. This is a common cause of mishaps, and there is simply no reason to do that kind of stupid stunt.

as we approach a dock I always tell people that are on my boat not to jump on the dock.

We were at Chesapeake Anchorage (next marina over)when it happened. Police moved everyone from the Tiki bar etc when they brought the person out of the water. It was a horrible tragedy. It was amazing the different stories that circled around that night. First we heard it was a 44 year old then a 25 etc. Then we heard he was running from the law. Then heard jumped from a docking boat. No one was really sure. Really a lot of bad info. Bottom line, though, is someone lost their life. We all need to practice safe boating procedures to minimize (hopefully eliminate) any opportunity for such a tragedy to happen.

So did he hit his head and drown or what? Simply jumping didn't kill him, something else had to have occured. Still a tragic event.

Latest "Unofficial" story is that he tripped when he jumped....hit his head....fell in water and drowned.

I was on C dock that night at the Canal Day weekend party.

Tragic.
