We are going to be cruising around the Bay this weekend, going to visit the USS Iowa and basically hang out. We want to go see China Camp and I have never been there. Any problems with water depth, severe tides or anything else helpful to know. Thanks

DBH,
I don't have an answer to your question, unfortunately, but you've piqued my interest... are you berthing overnight somewhere in Port Richmond near the Iowa? I see there's a marina there...
Tom

Yes we are berthing at the Berkeley Marina and then on Sat we are going by boat to the Bay Marina to tie up and its a short walk, I am told, to the Iowa. We are staying at the Berkely Marina because there are a lot of watering holes nearby within walking distance. They are having tours of the old battleship on Sat and Sundays, again I am told, and thats what we want to see.

The waters around China Camp are some of the calmest waters you will see in the bay. It's a good place to anchor for the afternoon but I don't know about overnighting -- as I am not familiar with winds and tides in that part of the bay. I have seen other boats tie up to piling versus anchoring. I wouldn't recommend it, but they seemed to do fine.

If you are thinking about a pleasant marina to stay in near China Camp, try Loch Lomand marina. It's scenic and there are shops within walking distance; and Andy's Local Grocery is the best place imaginable for provisioning.

Have a great trip and post some pics afterwards!

There can be some hellish tides during run-out. Gotta get a good anchor set.

I've never approached from the water but I've been there from land. Looks like a shallow beach...but it's been over 20 years. I think there was a pier[:I]
