"CHICAGO (CBS) - Almost one month into spring, and the U.S. Coast Guard is still breaking up ice around the Great Lakes.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, more than 64 percent of Lake Superior was covered in ice as of Wednesday. Lake Michigan was 21 percent covered, Lake Huron was 31 percent covered, Lake Erie was 14 percent covered, and Lake Ontario was 2 percent covered. The entire Great Lakes system was 37 percent covered in ice."

"This winter, the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan, were 93 percent covered in ice, which is a record.
The Coast Guard also conducted ice breaking operations along Chicago's shoreline after a record 25 days of temperatures at zero or below this winter."
 
As a boater on Lake Erie, it is still cold. Water temps in the western basin are around 40 degrees and the eastern basin water temps are closer to 34 degrees. My boat goes in next week, so hopefully temps will warm up some more.
 
I ran a boat this week up the rivers then into Lake MI yesterday from Hammond IN to Milwaukee WI. According to the transducer we were seeing water temps in the upper 20's. With the temps this cold this late, I don't see the lake being "swimmable" much before August...
 
They haven't even pulled the ice boom off of Erie yet. It's JUST starting to get to spring here on the Lake Ontario South Shore...and then they'll pull the boom and it'll give us a few extra weeks of cold and ice floating by (meanwhile right now, there's no ice visable at all in the lake!).
 
Water temps in western lake erie now in mid 40s launched last friday air temps in th 70's when we launched stayed on the boat for 4 days and woke up Tuesday morning to temps in the 30's with snow on boat and dock and winds gusting to 35 mph with snow showers,thank God that only lasted for one day much better since then but still have to use caution around the water at these temps
 
There were four fishermen who died this past week in the western basin of Lake Erie.
 
An email I received this morning from the President of the WBSA:

WBSA Members,

I’ve held off for two or three days before sending this note to our membership… I was hoping that some news might come in that I could share... but it has not.

Probably most of you are aware of the boating accident on Lake Erie that has taken away two of our club members and two of their relatives and friends. For members further away who may not have heard, a short and sad update.

Bryan Huff and Amy Santus, club members, LEWT contestants and friends, were lost Wednesday evening in a boating accident that still is not fully explained – the investigation continues. Ramped in at Turtle Point, they hade been fishing near the islands and sent a cell phone message that they were heading back in.

The boat was found semi-submerged near the Locust Point reefs, and the bodies of Amy and her 17 year-old niece Paige Widmer were found in the reef area. Bryan and his friend Andrew Rose have not yet been found.

The Ohio Division of Watercraft has said that the recovered boat does not show damage that might explain the accident. Our prayers and thoughts are with the families of these fine people.

The irony in the recovery of the two females in the 40+ water temperature was the fact they were wearing life jackets and they drowned. There were no signs of hypothermia according to the medical examiner. As of this posting the 2 men have not been found.
 
If one could look for anything good to come out of this, here in Oklahoma our tornado records are showing a dramatic reduction in activity and most believe it is all related to the severe winter vortex's of this last winter.
Seems weather is going in extreems whether it be droughts or winter vortex's.
