Within the next few years (hopefully sooner, rather than later) I plan on purchasing a larger boat, in the 40 foot range, for cruising and some diving in and around the Florida coastal area, Bahamas ,etc. Because of the exorbitant cost of a new boat, I have been looking into older, quality name boats. I am under the impression that the general durability of construction and seaworthiness of some of the older boats (circa 1970's or so) are, in many cases, better than many of the new offerings and am encouraged that I may be able to pick up something that will meet my needs.
The question I have is - am I crazy to think about purchasing a 30'ish year old boat ?
I have looked into some of the old Hatteras and Bertrams as well as Chris Craft (I really like the layout of the Chris Craft Coho). Assuming that I take my time and do my due diligence, Should I expect to be able to find something seaworthy and reliable for a reasonable price ?
I would appreciate any opinions and/or recommendations on this subject.
Thanks
