Vic,
I did the proper procedure for recommissioning my head this spring (pulled of the salt tank feed T and made sure check ball was free). Everything works fine. Last weekend I noticed it was not drawing in as much water as before but still enough to flush. By the end of the day on Sunday, I noticed barely drawing water at all.
My question is (finally) do you think I did damage to the pump housing because of lack of water? I replaced that unit at the start of last season and hope I do not have to do it again $$$$. I will be down this weekend to pull the cover plate and take a look. The impeller was new last year too

If it was pumping SOME water, you didn't likely damage the inside of the pump. While you're there, pull the pump cover off at the rear of the head, and remove the impeller. If it's in reasonably good condition, put it back in BACKWARDS! The vanes tend to "take a set" while the unit is laid up over the winter, and don't work as well. Turning the impeller around and putting it in backwards will bend the vanes in the opposite direction and in many cases, the thing will then pump like new. Just be careful not to tear the paper coverplate gasket.

If you do tear the gasket, wait until everything has dried out completely, then take a small dab of silicon sealant and put just a film of it on the face of the pump housing. Then set the gasket in place, and put another film of silicon on the face of the gasket. Then replace the cover and the screws. Tighten snugly but not real tight, so as not to strip out the threads in the screw holes. Allow at least 2 hours for it to all set up, before trying to run any water through it.

Also, make sure that the salt tank has water in it, otherwise the pump will suck air through the tank, and won't pump nearly as much. And another thing, if the salt tank adapter fitting (with the ball and spring in it) is being used, check to be sure that the ball and spring have been removed from the toilet's pump - you can't have 2 balls and springs in series, or the pump won't pump any water.

Thanks Vic!

I did remove the ball and spring from the head when I added the salt tank. Does it matter that the salt T fitting is mounted on a down angle? I assume as long as it is before the intake side of the head, it should not matter.

Craig
