A friend's Crusader 240, Chrysler 318, has broken advance springs on both engines. Prestolite IDH-7004. Also would like to replace the pickup coil.
Any ideas for possible replacement distributors??

Ken

Really surprised both broke. Web search distributor advance spring. Many available.

There may be an electronic distributor potential replacement at the bottom right of catalog p. 467 ( pdf. p. 2/20):

Summit Racing could also help with springs or distributor I would imagine. Just make sure you tell them it is the marine 318.

You mentioned pickup coil. Do you think that distributor came with one originally or was it converted?

Will check the catalog in the morning. Thanks

This is an original, I think 1987 electronic pickup.
The boat has been having low speed stalling problems for at least several years. Engines would start fine, then stall sometimes within 5 minutes of one an other. They would stumble for an extended period on a restart. I just got involved a couple of days ago when the owner was completely frustrated.
Found multiple loose, corroded connection problems in the DC wiring. Idled both engines for better than an hour before the stbd.engine died. Found the input voltage was 10v at the ignition switch, 12.4 at the engine breaker.
Had a poor connection at the right volt meter on the lower control station. That fixed that but then just started going both engine basics.
The confusion was always why both engines when everything was totally isolated. The commonalty here is lack of use in a moist environment.
The boat sits in one pool at the start of the Ohio river.

Going to order 1 new distributor and install it on the stbd engine and see how it goes. I don't want to deal with hand selecting springs as I don't have access to a distributor machine, did that in high school in the late 50s. The owner is having surgery the end of next week so there is no push.

Question; During the troubleshooting process I noted an oil pressure switch on the alternator field (this boat has mechanical fuel pumps). What is the purpose? To prevent dieseling on shut down?

Ken

I hadn't heard of an OP switch being connected to an alternator before but that means nothing as I know too little about alternators ( & most things :D ). Apparently it is part of the exciter circuit for the alternator.

Here are a couple threads that address that, ...more or less:

You could google up a man who goes by "billinstuart" who has a distributor machine to consult with if by any chance you end up having any need to resurrect the Prestolite.
I did notice when separately google searching the part number for that electronic distributor in the above linked catalog it mentioned "replaces ( some models) of Mallory". But the catalog specifically listed the 318 so hopefully it will be compatible.
