Crusader 270 exhaust smell and cuts out over 2800

have recently purchased a 85 Cruisers Inc Avanti Vee 29 with twin Crusader 270. I don't know if it's proper etiquette to put two problems but, here they are. First is that, I get an extremely high amount of exhaust gases coming back over the stern of the boat. The whole back section is useless when underway. We are forced to sit ot the helm and that only fits three max. Any ideas on how to redirect. Second is that the starboard engine cuts out just past half throttle when undeway. It runs and sounds fine in netral. Just happened the last time out. I ran both motors off the same tank and problem continued. I'm new at this boating stuff so thanks for your help in advance.
