As I was charging the boat from dry dock I got a strong zap while installing my zincs to my shafts. As soon as I unplugged the on board charger the 110 outlet on land the issue went away. I did not receive the a zap with just the batteries turned on or off. My charger is original in my 89 Sea Ray and I have heard that they can cause issues. Additionally I had to replace my shafts this year due to electrolysis damage.

My skill level is not very strong when it comes to electricity and current. But it's about time I learned. Plus my dock neighbors are very interested in me fixing this issue as well......

And suggestions on how to trouble shoot this one????? Please remember, novice when it comes to electricity and I am learing how to read a volt meter.....

Thank you for your assistance

I'm guessing high leakage across the charger input transformer. As electical devices age dielectrics in components such as transformers and capacitors start to break down and leakage currents increase. Your charger is almost 20 years old and I suspect this is the problem. It's also possible that you have a bad earth connection in your power inlet or boat bonding system. Either of these could leave your boat "floating" (pun intended) relative to the ground you were standing on while working. I suggest using an ohmeter to check the boat earth connection and if that's OK using a portable charger and see if the problem disappears. BTW check for boat to earth voltage using a voltmeter and not the "check for zap" test. Good luck - Bob
