I replaced the stereo system in my 1988 Mariner. Now when I crank up the volume, it trips the stereo circuit breaker. So I need to get a breaker with a higher amperage rating. The breakers in my DC panel have paddle/toggles and fit through a 1/2" hole in the panel. I've looked high and low via search engines but can't seem to find these. Does anyone know of a source? I could replace it with a "push-to-reset" type of breaker, but I really like the original style.

While I am certainly no electrician, I would be a bit worried that the new unit is tripping the breaker. Have you verified that the amperage draw is not exceeding your wiring capacity?

Is the new radio supposed to draw so much current that it exceeds the breaker capacity, or might there be some other issue?

In general, I've been told that breaker capacities are chosen for a reason. Increasing the breaker capacity without changing anything else in the circuit is asking for trouble.
It may not be a problem here, I really don't know. Just not what I would call a "best practice".

I don't know where to get the breaker. I'm sure someone else will know of a good source. Lots of REALLY helpful folks here. :)

The new stereo has an amperage draw that exceeds the original stereo system. A breaker with a larger amerage rating is required. That's pretty common when replacing stereo equipment in older vehicles with higher wattage units that drive more speakers and accessories. I just need to know here to find them.

Send us a picture of your breaker panel, with any luck someone can identify your breaker and steer you in the right direction for a new (larger) breaker.

I was able to get a replacement breaker for my '86 Mariner from the boat dealer that ramsport works for. I think the parts guy's name was Vinny but that was a few years back. Maybe ramsport will chime in.

We have all of the breakers in stock that Carver has used over the years (we are Carver's oldest dealer) You can e-mail Vince at "vinces at simamarine.com" When you e-mail him, let him know what amperage you'd like and whether is is held in by 2 little screws or by the switch post. Cost is going to be between $15.00 and $20.00 plus shipping and any tax that may be required
