I had a mechanic do an ECM scan on a 2001 5.7 mercruiser. He told me that everythng looked good except the ECM was running in slave mode. After that the seriousness of the situation got lost in the translation. Should the ECM be replaced?

The ECM will go into limp mode if there is a problem. The ECM should have reflected a code in relation to a system failure. Do you have an engine that will not run above 2000 rpms?

The mechanic said nothing other than using the slave. I don't know about actual performance, we ran the test on land usnig earmuffs.

Did he erase the codes to see if they would come back? If the ECM recived an overheat code it would go into limp mode. Did the engine run in a normal temperature range?

No he didn't erase any of the codes. He said there were no overheat codes. The only abnormal or error was the slave mode. I'm not sure we ran the engine long enough to bring it up to full temperature.

Slave mode is a back up system in the ecm. Check all the fuses located on the wiring harness from the ecm to the engine. Other then that i can't help you much more from here.
