Now that Edgartown Harbor is really Edgartown (bi-tidal) river, has anyone heard of an allowed resumption of anchoring in Katama Pond ? With the extensive tidal flushing it seems that the concerns over chemical burden on the shellfish operations in the pond are eliminated. Someone, anyone ?????????????

Good question. The person who can answer it is the Edgartown Harbor Master. FYI the number is 508 627 4746.

All the best,

What did I miss?? Tidal river ?? We were also disappointed when they removed the access to anchoring in Katama bay a few years back. We used to Vacation there for a week every August. Is something new??

Wow, just read some blogs on the internet about this. You are probably correct, the ban on anchoring will probably be lifted. Comments about strong tidal currents affecting the chappy ferry may be interesting. Time will tell. Thanks for the news.

Here's an e-mail I sent to the Harbormaster about anchoring:

Will anchoring be allowed this summer in Katama Pond? I have a 46 foot trawler that draws 5 feet and would like to stay for 2 nights..

Thank you!

Here's his reply:

Dear Tom-- Katama Bay is still closed to anchoring unless I open it because of weather (NE wind). With the new cut at Norton Point current in Katama Bay has been measured at over 3.3 knots.

Here's the last question I posed to him:

Mr. Blair,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I thought the original reason for closing the pond for anchoring was water quality issues with uncaring boaters contaminating the closed ecosystem. Since the pond is now being flushed so well with the new cut, is it possible that opening the pond might be considered (in addition to opening selectively for weather)?

regards,

Tom

I've not heard back yet...time will tell.

Tom
