Which unit should I use Electro Scan or Lectra / San in my sailboat.
I am thinking about changing the Head mate manual
toilet which is only one year old to electric fresh water Sea era toilet.
I'll also be moving to florida in the next year and would like to add one of thee above units.
Which is the better unit to use and will need to use a salt tank, one unit needs the salt tank with
pump and one does not.

Nick,
The Electro Scan is the newer model of the Lectro San - same basic product from Raritan. They also sell a Purasan (which I recently installed in my boat). It uses a chemical tank (primarily chlorine and a touch of Bromine) which avoids the massive 12V power requirement of electrolytically (sp?)separating the sea water salt into chlorine. The Purasan uses MUCH less power, which I would think is very important on a sail boat. The chemical cartridge is an added expense, but with the reduced power issue, it is a good trade off.

If you use an Electro Scan or LectroSan, using a fresh water flush toilet will require adding an external salt tank (more $$). If you stay with the raw water flush toilet, the unit uses the sea water salt. Your call...

When I picked a Type 1 sanitation system for our boat three years ago the choice was between the Raritan Purasan and the Raritan Lectrasan. The new version Electroscan was not available then.

I picked the Purasan because of it's lower power requirement and the fact that it wouldn't need the salt tank option for use in brackish or fresh water. Purasan requires 15 amps at 12-VDC while the Lectrasan was 44 amps. I think the new Electroscan requires 38 amps.

I believe that both the Lectrasan and the new Electroscan require the optional salt tank if you operate the systems with brackish or fresh flush water. The Purasan has no need for a salt tank, ever.

Purasan costs less, too. BoatFix stocks them along with Lectrascan and that's where I bought ours.

The Lectra/San was discontinued from production in 2005. Lectra/San units are no longer being made. The replacement for it is called the Electro-scan. They both work on the same basic principle, but the Electro-scan has much more sophisticated electronics than the Lectra/San had. So you can't choose between them - one of them is no longer being made.

Yep I'm here. My wife Dorothy bought a red purse, but no red shoes as of yet!
