We're experiencing more trouble with one of our engines. It's an 8.1 Mercruiser inboard, closed cooling (year 2002). The engine idled just perfectly. I then started out of our slip and the engine just shut down. I restarted it then tried powering up and when it got to about 1,200 rpm it started bogging down, followed by dying out again. Also, the check engine alarm would sound at the same time the engine was starting to bog down. We turned around and limped back in to our slip on one engine.

My mechanic took a look at the engine after we left and checked the fuel/water separater filter (no water observed in it). He said he'd be hooking his diagnostic tool up to it today to see what codes may come up. Of course, it idled perfectly for the mechanic while he was there (no bogging down). The fuel gage shows a 1/2 tank of gasoline for that engine and I have not put any gas in this season (the gas is from last year). The engine has a total time of approximately 120 hours. The temp and oil pressure gages consistently read as normal (same as the other engine).

Would anyone be able to take a guess as to what could possibly be causing this to happen to the engine?
