I want to test the cable modem output speed to my Router.

The modem has ethernet ports but my computers have only USB. I see converters for sale on the web but They look like more than just cable wiring and I wonder how they might affect my speed measurements.

Any suggestions?

Why? If you suspect it is slow, buy a cable modem with built in router. (mine is an Arris)
Save the rental and have the fastest possible transfer.
You'll likely save the price of rental within 6-10 months.

Bruce, your last two posts are in the wrong forum.

They are not converters but Ethernet adapter, just like the cards that used to install in expansion slots

. I don’t use cable modem but you may not be able to connect the modem directly to the Ethernet adapter, you may have tongonthru a router

Oops I’ll have to go back to my pc instead of the phones small screen.
Perhaps somebody will move them

Every laptop I have ever seen, at least in the last ten years, has an ethernet port.

I think the HDMI port replaced the ethernet port

likewise - never seen one without

Is this a new laptop?

No many of the new laptops don’t have the rent ports since they all have WiFi and most routers nowadays are WiFi capable. HDMI Is irrelevant to networking it s only for video and audio

If you need to use an Ethernet connection then a USB network adapter is the only solution

Agreed, as laptops get thinner out goes the wired NIC as its very tall. Mac's have been just wifi for years

Many new PCs do not have a network port. I know my son's Apple does not. They have replace that with USB C port and require the buyer to also buy an external hub. It's just another example of a price increase hidden behind technology.

An adapter is so cheap and rarely needed these days... cheap price for thinner notebooks
