Lanlubber friends of mine are having a gathering in May in Fells Point, Baltimore Inner Harbor. I'm planning to join them, by boat, and stay overnight.

Any recommendations for a marina close by? Doesn't necessarily need to be the absolute closest, but it should be easily walkable.

I was at Anchorage in Canton once, seemed nice, but maybe a bit far from Fells Point.

EDIT: After digging around on the net, maybe Fells Point isn't actually right in inner harbor, but more north and east? If so, Anchorage or Henderson might actually be very close. Inner Harbor East might be too, but any links I find to Inner Harbor East all seem to be dead.

The only Marina in Fells Point is Hendersons Wharf. You have to contact them by e-mail as they never seem to answer their phone. You could use any of the marinas in Baltimore as the water taxi stops at just abouot all of them and you can ride it all day at one price. If you are a boat US member Anchorage has the best discount and prices.

Joe, like Mike said, Henderson’s Wharf is the only marina actually in Fells Point, my personal favorite is the Inner Harbor East (410-625-1700) is not too far from Fells Point and splits the distance to the actual Inner Harbor pavilions. Jerry

Joe,

If you're comfortable tying to the bulkhead, you can tie-up anywhere along the bulkhead from Pier 5 to the Inner Harbor, and pay a nominal amount of money - $1/ft, and $4 for 30/50 amp service. The Harbormaster will pay you a visit to collect his share.

I'm told that Broadway Pier in Fellspoint doesn't fall under the jurisdiction of the Baltimore Harbormaster, so that area is free for docking.

Inner Harbor East is my favorite - walkable to Fells Point and the Inner Harbor...

We were at Broadway Pier on Sunday and it is not part of the dockmaster's territory. There isn't much room there though and you get buffeted around quite a bit from the constant activity of water taxi's and the tug boats in season. You might be able to find a spot there if you go early in the day.

For overnighting I think Inner Harbor East would be your best bet since you'll be a bit farther away from the all night party at Fells Point. And a bit more secure than along the bulkhead at night. You can get to anywhere in the Inner Harbor via the water taxi.

I have been in Inner Harbor East Marina since November, and things have changed rapidly due to the start of construction of a new office tower immediately in front of the marina. There in no parking available any longer, except along the streets if you can find it. The marina office is accessible only from the back (promanade) side. I also understand the marina office building is to be razed and replaced by a barge containing the marina office/heads within the marina. I understand they have also changed their rates (downward) due to the changes.

In all, it is not "bad", just a bit of a hassle. The location is still excellent to both Fells Point and the rest of the Inner Harbor, but I would guess there will be the normal noise and dirt from the construction to contend with soon.

Thanks for tips. Sounds like there are several decent options, maybe I'll go with Hendersons this trip, and save Inner Harbor East for another time since it is in transition. Good to know about the bulkhead -- I'm sure I'll make use of that at some point, particularly if not overnighting...

You may also check out baltimore Marine Center. www.baltimoremarinecenter.com. Located in the Canton area it is not a bad walk to fells point. Canton also has alot of great places to eat. BMC is a well maintained marina including a clean modern bath house, pool, floating piers etc.

Our last visit to Henderson's Wharf (2 summers ago) was not one that will cause us to go back again. While the dockage was fine and the location was outstanding for a visit to Fells Point, the bathrooms and shower facilities were in a very run-down trailer. You might want to check to see if they have replaced the trailer with more permanent accommodations.

As of late last year (November) the trailer was still it in terms of heads ** Henderson's.

Think I could use some advise from those of you more experienced with Baltimore.

Once or twice every year for the past six years, I launch my 22' cuddy at Sandy Point and head up to Fells Point. So far, every time, I've managed to find a spot at the pier near Timothy's restaurant. Since there's usually very little space available, I know that my luck will run out someday.

You mentioned a water taxi....where can I anchor to be picked up by it. Where is a website that describes what its service area is?

Does the Baltimore harbor water taxi service come out to anchored vessels? Or is it just point-to-point for stops on land?

I have never seen boats anchored in Baltimore Harbor ... I am not sure it's permitted. And with the traffic through there it would be risky.

However, there is a lot of dockage available ... along the west seawall near the Lightstreet pavillion, the piers by the aquarium and the finger piers near the science center. Any of those should put you near a water taxi spot. The fee is only $5.00 for 4 hours for docking in these locations.

edit: here is the site for the water taxi and there is a page for locations. The price sure went up though .. used to be $2 for all day. Now it's $8. http://www.thewatertaxi.com/index2.html

Also ... if you want to launch closer to Baltimore than Sandy Point, there is a ramp at the Harbor Hospital and puts you in at a more sheltered location if you need it. The area looks shady but it's a well used ramp. Wouldn't go at night though.
